onemorefortheroad asked: What is the most quintessential New York experience that you've had so far (good or bad)?

The bad: Being mugged.  Anytime waiting for the Subway for longer than 20 minutes in the summertime when it’s hot and humid and the whole station smells funky and there’s someone playing an accordian badly and you can actually feel your own hair frizzing and there’s a drop of sweat trickling its way between your shoulder blades and down your lower back.  Every single time I pay rent.

No!  I know what the worst, most quintessential New York moment was! A giant cockroach in my room, about a month after I moved here.  That motherfucker was the size of a small rat.

The good: The night of my 21st birthday, we met this old lady and her husband on the street who was sitting in a boat that was parked in the street and we got to drunkenly talking with them about The Philadelphia Story and we took some photos and I won’t ever see her again but I remember her name, which was Jeanine in case anyone is wondering.  Dating a guy who loved Central Park as much as I do so we spent the few dates that we had just wandering around the park and talking about books and music and he kissed me under a tree somewhere near the Great Lawn, and next to the Egyptian Obelisk.  Any day spent exploring the city with this lady.

But really, the most mundane experiences are the most quintessential: laundromats and street food and crying on the subway.
